On Thursday, June 7, NPR's Terri Gross interviewed Tom Philpott who is the food and ag blogger for Mother Jones. The interview is titled "Accessing Consumer Concerns About the Meat Industry." It is fascinating and I recommend you listen though I suggest you do so on an empty stomach lest you lose your lunch.
You'll hear about chickens being fed protein from cows, and cows being fed chicken waste. That's not just disgusting but it's a good recipe for Mad Cow disease. And you'll learn more about the massive use of antibiotics in raising livestock and how that is endangering human health. The cruelty to animals is not specifically noted but the ways in which animals are packed together is discussed, with the cruelty aspect inherent in that discussion.
