DawnWatch Dallas: Vegan shopping featured in the Dallas Morning News 6/19/07

Dallas folks,
Please dash off a quick appreciative letter to the editor for "Don't be cruel It's getting easier for vegan shoppers to look good - and feel good, too" in yesterday's paper. I will paste it below. The Dallas Morning News takes letters at http://www.dallasnews.com/cgi-bin/lettertoed.cgi
THE DALLAS MORNING NEWS
June 19, 2007 Tuesday

Don't be cruel It's getting easier for vegan shoppers to look good - and feel good, too

By Erin Wade

Healthy Living, Pg. 3G

The new stylish living goes beyond luxury beauty products and big-name designers. Cruelty-free is what's in fashion now.

WHAT IS VEGAN?

The basics are obvious: no meat, eggs, honey, gelatin, etc. But animal byproducts are present in our everyday lives beyond the kitchen. Many vegans ban clothing and personal-care products made with leather, silk and even wool and down, plus any product tested on animals, according to Vegan Action. Visit www.vegan.org to learn more about veganism and easy steps toward living vegan.

FACE FIRST

Beauty company Smashbox has created two eye shadow Palettes for PETA in Earth Mother and In the Wild. The limited-edition shadows are 100-percent vegan and have never been tested on animals. The colors are soft and earthy, and the kit includes a double-ended brush for easy blending. $34 each at Sephora in NorthPark Center and at Galleria Dallas.

FEET FORWARD

Walk on the wild-friendly side in shoes from Simple's Green Toe line. They're made with sustainable materials: jute shoelaces, recycled car-tire soles, cork insoles and bamboo-fabric lining. Some styles are made with wool felt as well, but if you're vegan, you can choose the shoes without it. Women's GT Jane in tendril sunset gold ($85) and men's Stop Global Warming Toepeeka ($65) are light and fun for summer. Find them at simpleshoes.com and at Green Living, 1904 Abrams Parkway (Lakewood).

FEELING FRUITY

If you really want to feel fresh and clean in the tub, add some products from 100% Pure to your bathroom. The company's shower gels, scrubs, lotions and butters are all organic and come in flavors so yummy you could just eat them (but don't). Almost all products are vegan except for the ones made with honey. The vegan options we love are the organic Juicy Pineapple shower gel ($13.50) and the organic Strawberry Butter body scrub ($19). 100% Pure products can be found at Bath & Body Works in NorthPark Center. Find out more at www.puritycosmetics.com.

GREEN AND CLEAN

Lush Cosmetics' handmade products are so natural that many even have expiration dates. But the company also has a strong stance against animal testing and includes many vegan products in its catalog. The Veganese lemon-scented hair conditioner ($24.95) is made with a seaweed-gel base instead of animal-based glycerines and sulfates. We also love the Lip Lime balm ($7.95, below), which is made with mango and avocado butters, and the Dream Cream ($20.95, above), made with oat milk and cocoa butters. Find these products at Lush in NorthPark Center.

BAG IT UP

Some of the stylish and animal-friendly bags by Christian Livingston look, feel and even smell like soft leather but are actually made from PVC. A toggle tote ($85) is supple and handy with lots of pockets and details. The line also includes hip nylon bags ($67, shown) for another leather alternative. Available at Fitting Gifts at the Fitting Room, 4111 Lomo Alto Drive in Dallas.
DawnWatch Texas -- Still tickets for Dallas Bizarro Baloney Show, Sunday May 21

The following is from Dan Piraro, creator of the wonderful Bizarro cartoon, which appears in 250 newspapers across the world. (See www.Bizarro.com ) I saw and greatly enjoyed his show in Los Angeles a few weeks ago. I know there are still tickets available for the Dallas show and can assure you it would be a fun and animal friendly thing to do with your Sunday night.
Have fun!
-----------------------------------

Hello, all my animal-friendly friends,

Thought you may like to know that the last three performances (probably ever) of The Bizarro Baloney Show take place next week. It's a one-man live comedy show, sort of 21st Century vaudeville variety style, and has a nice-sized section on animal rights and veganism in the middle of it. Since I'll be performing in the Midwest, I can really use the support of some folks who "get it" in the audience. I don't want to be BBQed by a roomful of angry, hormone-laden meat eaters.

If you're in the area of one of these shows, please come and bring a busload of friends. The show is tons of fun and I hang out after to sell and sign books and draw pictures and stuff. The profits from my shows, after travel and publicity expenses, go to Woodstock Farm Animal Sanctuary. (woodstocksanctuary.com)

Dallas, The Lakewood Theater, Sunday, May 21
http://www.lakewoodtheater.com/

Tulsa, (yes, I know, it's my hometown) Nightingale Theater, Monday, May 22
Call 918-583-8487 for tickets

Chicago, Improv Olympic, Thursday, May 25
773-880-0199 for tickets

Hope to see you there!
Dan
P.S. if you have a mailing group of folks that might be in these areas of the country, please feel free to forward this. I like having my animal welfare peeps in the audience!
