Vegucated premiere, with Bob Barker, Landmark, Los Angeles, this Thursday 10/27/11

This Thursday, October 27, is the Los Angeles premiere of Marisa Miller Wolfson's new film Vegucated. The film is as warm and accessible and delightful as the gal who made it -- it just radiates her lovely energy. I watched a DVD of it a few months ago thinking I was doing a friend a favor but found myself glued to the screen, completely invested in the stories of the three omnivores who Marisa persuaded to go vegan for six weeks -- that's the premise of the fun film.

This is the opposite of a dry documentary. If there are any animal cruelty scenes (I can't remember) they are minimal -- the viewer learns what Marisa's subjects are learning but is not exposed to the information at anything like the level of intensity that the poor subjects experience. Yet the film does have lots of useful information.

Plus it is realistic -- we see real human struggles, including some setbacks and possible failures, as the subjects try to work out how to incorporate their vegucation into their daily lives.

You can definitely bring your non-veggie friends to the premier without their feeling that they are being preached at. And you should. It is going to be a fun night.

Bob Barker will be there! Those of us who heard him at the recent Mercy for Animals event know that he is fun! So will Marisa and her three terrific experimental subjects. And there will be good vegan food and wine. Please join us. You'll have a great time and this lovely little film could really use our support.

"One Lucky Elephant" -- superb film plays in LA this weekend. Q&A with director 6/24-6/26/11

A film I adore opens tomorrow, Friday June 24, at the Laemmle Music Hall in Beverly Hills. It is playing for one week. We have all seen gruesome and hard to watch films about the abuse of animals in entertainment -- this film is not one of those. It delivers the same message but in an even-handed tone that will appeal to all of your friends and family and, most importantly, as an engrossing story about a personal relationship.

Here's the description from the filmmakers:
"Where does an elephant go after a life in the circus? Sixteen years have passed since circus producer David Balding adopted Flora, the orphaned baby African elephant he lovingly raised as part of his family and made the star of his show. As Flora approaches adulthood, he realizes that she is not happy performing. Ultimately, David must face the difficult truth that the circus is no place for Flora. Christmas day invitation

I wanted my local DawnWatch veggie friends to know what my Facebook friends have been told -- that if you have nowhere to be this afternoon for Christmas, if perhaps you can't stand the sight of your family's baked ham, you are welcome at my house. I am having just a few folks over. Warning: Don't come if you hate the Little Drummer Boy (in which case you haven't listened to the lyrics which tenderly rail against the commercialism that Christmas has become) as I have downloaded seven versions. But don't worry, there will also be Usher, and Cee Lo Green's "F You" and John Lennon etc.
Do come if you'd like to toast vegan marshmallows over the fire.
And bring a coat -- we'll be outside a bit.

I am heading off to Yoga -- Gabi is doing a donation class at Maha Yoga in Brentwood at 10:30. All proceeds go to LA Mission. I will check email at 1pm, so drop a note by then if you want to come over. A few friends are coming over around 2.

If you choose to spend the day with your fur kids, I wish you a peaceful and joyous day with them. And I wish all fur-kids, and hoofed and feathered and scaled kids, and the humans who care for them, a beautiful holiday season and year ahead.

"How I Became an Elephant" free screening at the Artivist film festival -- Thurs 12/2/10

As part of the Artivist Film Festival, the new feature "How I Became an Elephant" is screening this Thursday night, December 2, at 9:15pm. "How I Became an Elephant" is produced by Tim Gorski, who is responsible for one of my favorite activism films, about Miami Seaquarium's captive Orca, "Lolita: Slave to Entertainment." With Lolita, Tim did a fantastic job of balancing entertainment with message, so I can't wait to see his latest. It is edited by artist and activist extraordinaire Synthian Sharp.
When bookings exceeded seating limits the screening was moved to the 600 seat theatre so there is now room for everybody. Bring all your friends and help us fill the Egyptian.

Pedro has been endorsed by the Humane Society Legislative Fund for his extraordinary work protecting animals and punishing abusers. Karen Dawn seeks assistant plus for animal advocacy media job, March 2009

I am still looking for an assistant, but my criteria has changed. I am going to rent out that room separately, so am now looking for somebody who lives in Los Angeles to come in part-time, Monday to Friday, 10-2 or 10-3. Despite the wonders of our technological age, I am not looking for somebody to work remotely. The home office is in Pacific Palisades, overlooking the water. Your dog is welcome at work, and will enjoy the bluff next door.

This would be an ideal job for a freelancer of some sort who would like to have a guaranteed regular income to pay basic bills, and would like to work in the animal advocacy world. Hopefully we would both be delighted if the job becomes full time and long term.

This job might be perfect for somebody with a graphic design or other computer background, as computer skills are required, preferably including knowledge of some html. Knowledge of the Adobe Creative Suite, particularly Dreamweaver would be a plus. Some video and audio editing skills would also be helpful. You will also need to have administrative skills.

You will be doing some work on the web in the viral marketing worlds of Facebook and YouTube. You will also be keeping track of my calendar and schedule. And you will be making phone calls, dealing with animal advocacy groups, bookstores, newspapers and TV and radio stations. There will also be some basic assistant stuff, like running errands to the printer or post office. While you will have a lot of real responsibility, you'll also be happy to pick up dry-cleaning or dog food on the way back from Kinko's.

There may be a little travel to a few conferences per year, but that is negotiable.

You must be a self-starter. Part of your job will be to keep the ball rolling when I drop it -- to keep things running while I am writing or traveling or dreaming or whatever. If, after we email, we decide to have a follow-up chat, you will be calling me to make sure the conversation happens, which will be indicative of a typical task, as you will be in charge of to-do lists. If it is left up to me, our intended conversation will get lost on my list and won't happen.

Somebody with whom I talked and laid out all of my upcoming projects said, "Basically you need a campaign manager." I thought that was a brilliant way to put it. But I also need an assistant, and at this stage of the campaign the two will have to be rolled into one -- and there is no other staff just yet, except for interns and volunteers that you might dig up. We are at the very early stages of the campaign.

Please be ready to produce some wonderful references from past jobs or teachers.

Finally, hopefully you will be excited about the work. If you are seriously interested in the job I will be delighted if you've read "Thanking the Monkey" and are therefore familiar with my general approach, and are keen to help.

DawnWatch LA: Ringling lawsuit covered in Los Angeles Times 2/4/09

Today's, Wednesday February 4, Los Angeles Times includes an article, by Sarah Gantz, headed "Endangered circus species?; Animal welfare groups sue Ringling, alleging abuse of elephants. The circus says it's a larger 'crusade' against animals at attractions." (Pg A10)

It opens:
"Tom Rider, who used to be a 'barn man' for Ringling Bros., said that when he worked there in the late 1990s, he regularly saw handlers of the circus' endangered Asian elephants abusing the giant creatures.

"He said they used long, sharp-hooked poles, 'hitting them in the legs, hooking them behind the ears' and leaving gashes the size of his finger.

"Ringling denies the allegations, saying it has never been cited for animal cruelty. But today, a nearly 9-year-old legal case over the elephants' treatment will come to trial in U.S. District Court."
