Date: July 31st, 2009

Today, Friday, July 31, the news in the animal world, and in the film world, is all about the sensational new movie "The Cove." It opens tonight in Los Angeles and New York, and in other cities shortly. You can read today's New York Times rave review at www.nytimes.com/2009/07/19/movies/19roht.html
All of the reviews of this film are fabulous.

Terri Gross of NPR's Fresh Air interviewed filmmaker Louie Psihoyos about the movie on Wednesday. The interview is on line at http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=111340010 . I am yet to listen to it but have heard (from DawnWatch subscriber Marilyn Mouradjian -- thank you!) that it is wonderfully moving. Please thank Fresh Air for the coverage by going to
http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=111340010 and choosing "Fresh Air" from the pulldown list.

I have seen the film; I was lucky enough to get to a screening at the Los Angeles Film Festival earlier this month. And yes, I think it lives up to the hype, and will probably be nominated this year for an Oscar. I was scared to see it, thinking the gory dolphin slaughter scenes would be more than I could handle. Indeed, there are a few minutes towards the end of the film that are hard to take. Those of you who have read Thanking the Monkey have seen still shots of the brutal slaughter, in the section on Flipper trainer Ric O'Barry's beautiful later career in dolphin rescue, and can imagine how much harder the moving video is to stomach. Bring somebody with a big and strong or soft and nurturing shoulder to bury your head in for a few minutes, but don't miss this film. I have no doubt you will be glad you saw it. It is gripping, hilarious in parts, beautifully shot, and not depressing -- it will charge you up and hopefully into action. In fact, either before or after you see
it, please go to http://www.SaveJapanDolphins.org to see what you can do to help.

You can find out when and where The Cove is screening near you, and even request a screening in your area, at http://www.thecovemovie.com/festivals/upcoming_screenings.htm
Meanwhile, please forward this alert to all of your friends in Los Angeles and New York; the reviews are so good that it might sell out opening weekend without us, but lets make sure, and thereby help to ensure its widespread distribution across the country and globe.
