The CBS news show "Sunday Morning," yesterday, January 25, covered London's famous Battersea animal shelter. The reporter, Richard Roth, tells us that the shelter promises never to turn away a dog or cat in need of help. He tells us, "To get in, all the animal needs to do is show up. To get out though, the staff must be convinced that it is getting into good hands."
We learn that the shelter calls adoption "rehoming" and that the shelter staff are looking for life-long homes. They compare the process to computer dating as the attributes of the human seeking a pet are matched with the attributes of the individual animals available for rehoming. The segment makes it wonderfully clear that dogs and cats are not objects to be acquired, but instead are sensitive beings who need a lifelong loving home. While the piece, airing in the US, covers a shelter in the UK, it serves as a great advertisement for adoption everywhere -- or perhaps I should write "rehoming."
