Before I sign off for Thanksgiving -- a veggie feast with two live turkey guests this year -- I wanted to let folks know about a bunch of events coming up in New York, Chicago, Columbus and Los Angeles -- three are
"Monkey events," and three are galas put on by groups I love: Farm Sanctuary and Mercy for Animals.
Starting in New York City:
Wednesday, December 3, New York City
A Thanking the Monkey book reading, signing and holiday gathering at East West Living Bookstore, in the cafe.
78 Fifth Avenue @ 14th Street, 7-9pm
From the East-West website:
"Come laugh at the cartoons, cry over the touching stories, and be intellectually challenged by the arguments in Karen Dawns critically acclaimed yet 'Access Hollywood' promoted new book, 'Thanking the Monkey: Rethinking the Way We Treat Animals.' Be part of the conversation that is sparking a peaceful revolution.
You can learn more and rsvp at www.ThankingtheMonkey.com/events.php
Thursday, December 4, New York City:
Farm Sanctuary presents "Winter Wonderland."
"This holiday season, celebrate compassion for all beings and give farm animals the gift of life by joining us at our Winter Wonderland for the Animals: A Farm Sanctuary Benefit."
6:00 - 10:00 p.m.
The Art Directors Club,
106 W. 29th St. New York, NY 10001.
"Don your favorite festive holiday cocktail attire to enjoy drinks and gourmet food from NYC's best veg restaurants and caterers, a silent auction, mingling with like-minded activists and celebrity supporters and goody bags!"
Go to http://www.farmsanctuary.org/farm/calendar/winterwonderland/index.html to learn more.
(Now doesn't that sound like a fun week to be holiday shopping in New York City?)
Then onto Chicago and/or Columbus for the weekend to catch the Mercy for Animals Events!
December 5th, Chicago,
Mercy for Animals, "Celebrating Compassion" gala
"Treat yourself to an inspiring evening filled with live music, vegan hors d'oeuvres, organic wine and spirits, cruelty-free silent auction items, incredible entertainment, and an awards ceremony at Mercy For Animals' upcoming Celebrating Compassion Gala."
You'll find out more details at http://www.celebratingcompassion.com/chicago/
Saturday, December 6, Columbus:
Mercy for Animals, "Celebrating Compassion" gala.
The event format is like that of the Chicago event, and specific information for the Columbus gala is at: http://www.celebratingcompassion.com/columbus/
Then onto Los Angeles!
Tuesday, December 9, Santa Monica:
"Thanking the Monkey" reading in Santa Monica
Those on the west-side of Los Angeles can join me for a local reading and signing at the Fairview Branch of the Santa Monica Public Library
2101 Ocean Park Blvd, Santa Monica. 7pm
Find out more and rsvp at www.ThankingtheMonkey.com/events.php
And then come to the last Thanking the Monkey reading of the year, a holiday event at Animal Acres!
Sunday, December 14, just north of Los Angeles:
Animal Acres 12-4pm.
Actors Bruce Greenwood (he is the captain in the new Star Trek movie!) Emily Deschanel (Bones) and Jorja Fox (CSI) will join me at the wonderful Animal Acres sanctuary, just forty minutes north of Los Angeles. There will be sanctuary tours, we'll do a book reading and signing and enjoy a "cowtail party". Bruce and Emily -- the actors -- will help me retire Bruce and Emily, my new foster turkeys (Jorja already has a sanctuary pig named after her). The turkeys will join us for Thanksgiving dinner and then stay here until we all go to Animal Acres on December 14th.
There is a fun story on Vegan Thanksgiving and a photo of me setting the table supervised by my feathered friends in the Thanksgiving Day Los Angeles Times, see http://tinyurl.com/5w9huu .
Find out more about the Thanking the Monkey Animal Acres event, and RSVP at www.ThankingtheMonkey.com/events.php

I hope there is something for you, whatever part of the country you are in, or a cheap flight to New York, Chicago, Columbus or Los Angeles.
Hoping to see you soon,
Karen Dawn
