Date: October 1st, 2007

After sending out the horse slaughter horror story, thank heavens I also get to share good news on this World Vegetarian Day, (http://www.worldvegetarianday.org/ ) October 1st, which also happens, perfectly, to be my birthday. Bruce Freidrich at PETA sent me this fun story as a birthday present:

The current issue of Time Magazine, dated October 8 but on newsstands now, has covered the Alicia Silverstone vegetarian campaign with the following on its "People" page:

"TOO MUCH FOR TEXAS
Alicia Silverstone attributes her slim physique to not eating meat. But the actress — who appears naked in a 30-sec. ad, similar to the print version shown here, for the animal-rights activist group peta — won't get to show off her bod to all boob-tube watchers. Comcast Cable pulled the commercial, scheduled to debut in Houston on Sept. 19, because it was too racy."

Most importantly, Time has printed a copy of the print ad from the campaign, to let us see how racy it is. Given what it would have cost to run the ad in Time Magazine, that is quite a gift to the animals. You'll find the piece, and ad, on line at:

(Though the date on that page is September 28, the article is printed in the current, October 8, edition.)

The line "a picture is worth a thousand words" has special meaning when the picture gives us a chance to get words printed on behalf of the animals. This one provides an opportunity for letters to the editor singing the joys of plant-based diets. Time Magazine takes letters at letters@time.com

Always include your full name, address, and daytime phone number when sending a letter to the editor. Remember that shorter letters are more likely to be published.

Yours and the animals',
Karen Dawn
